In 331 B.C., Alexander the Great crossed the Karun River at this location. In late antiquity, the city became an important center of Christianity. The hydraulic water systems of Shushtar represent an extraordinary example of ancient water management and engineering. The canals, dams, and waterfalls were used for irrigation and to provide power to the city—a masterpiece of engineering.
